North Essex: Culture is key in coast town regeneration 11:00am Tuesday 7th October Heritage experts claim investing in culture and art is the key to regenerating seaside towns such as Clacton, Walton and Dovercourt.
English Heritage said it has met with the Commission for Architecture and the Built Environment (Cabe) and the East of England Development Agency (Eeda) to discuss its plans for coastal regeneration in the region.
The commission has placed culture at the heart of regenerating seaside resorts and wants investment in the arts, public spaces, cultural assets and heritage projects.
Nigel Brown, Tendring Council’s communications manager, said the council is pleased the link between culture and regeneration in traditional seaside towns has been recognised.
“The council’s investment in the sea front at Dovercourt, including improvements to the grounds maintenance on the sea cliff is a recent example,” he said.
“Another example is assistance with the refurbishment of the Edwardian seafront shelter at Dovercourt.
“In partnership with Essex County Council, Tendring Council is developing opportunities at the Martello Tower in Jaywick to provide arts and cultural opportunities for the local community.”
