This is not really a story,
more a real time way of life for many - many people over the last century.
My nan used to take me to Romford market when they had cattle pens, we saw real animals up for sale. along with the merry go round of entertaining market people that go with it all.
I was about 3 or 4 years old at the time, so that was about 56 years ago, must have been 1952........wow, that far back ?..
My how time flies,
how life changing things happen,
even just how did i get to live in sunny old jaywick..
I / we / were in Romford on tuesday, went shopping led by daughter No. 2 and little boss, victoria...
The 2 - 99p shops in the market square were H U G E,
filled with goods, even filled fuller with bargain hungry shoppers.
some of the things you can buy for just 99p was amazing, and you had to be carefull to know when to stop...
I was "dragged" into the 2 of them, bought various items of treasure..(well you have to think that)
I never made it to the £1 shop in the shopping mall..
I went back to the car parked outside where the hundred year old RUMFORD shopping halls once stood....
G O NE - boarded up - new high tech shopping mall part opened in its place....
I done what all nosey passers by do at building sites and had a look through the little peep holes provided for that purpose..
The big diggers eating away at the last remaining bricks and mortor of Romfords old fabric, its now gone shopping halls.
Ok they were old, cold, and not always occupied, but it was Romford, the way it had been for hundred years or so..
The smells had gone of the pet stall, the sweet shop, both on the front next to the market...
The new multi story car park was open where the old market trolly`s were once stored.
Old Mc Cluskey`s night club on the corner as you drive out from the market has long gone, now heavily built on, not sure what, looks like offices, high rise offices, as if romford was short of offices.
The old shops and night club in the pedestrian end of North Street gone, boarded up, waiting for raw steel and concrete.
Secrets night club boarded up, cold, waiting for the concrete crunching machine to move into its car park and start eating away at history.
The big unwanted PetSmart store that is on the corner near Secrets and North Street boarded up, empty except for boot salers on the odd few days a week..
That too sits and waits for the machine to eat it all up, and by Romfords standards, its just a baby, being only 15 or so years old....
Flats, more flats the developers all cry, but,
some developers have caught a cold, even flu like symptoms.
the sale of new homes and flats has stopped, as if its gone headlong into a hundred years old solid brickwall that stands defiently and says,
ENOUGH....
Meanwhile old Rumfords Halls have gone into the rubble groundworks that newbuildings are made from, or stand on..
If old buildings have seen so much over the last hundred years,
what could they tell you,
what have they secretly seen and not told..
Have they souls to live for ever i wonder, or worse,
have they spirits both good and bad...
I hope not because if the bad spirit was annoyed, crunched up, used as rubble under the new shopping malls,
Its halloween soon........
who knows what bad spirits come out to play then...
Its a funny old world, as someone once said...
